The importance of Sox2, a member of the SRY-related HMG-box family of transcription factors, is difficult to overstate. It is an essential regulator of embryonic stem cell (ESC) pluripotency, maintenance, and proliferation. It belongs to the group of “Yamanaka factors” crucial for the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). In addition, Sox2 is a key player in maintaining the multipotency of neural stem cells, and ongoing research is exploring its roles in neurogenesis, adult tissue homeostasis, and aging.
